Los Angeles, early 1950s. The Mexican-American young man Tomas "Tommy" Cantanios is unable to move forward in a white-dominated society. Desperate, Tommy starts a boxing career, with which he achieves success under the name 'Tommy Kansas'. But when he expects to earn respect from the residents of Los Angeles, he discovers that they are only interested in his reputation. They still see him as a foreigner, even his white manager Pete Ganusa and trainer Freddy Jack, because of his race and skin color. Tommy becomes disillusioned and turns to booze, but then there's his devoted girlfriend Lucy Gomez.
