Intriguing love triangle during the waning days of the French colonization of Indochina and the beginning of the American meddling in Vietnam. The two smooth storylines that complement each other perfectly result in an entertaining film, thanks in part to the excellent portrayal of “womanizer” Michael Caine. These kinds of roles are, as it were, made for him. Brendan Fraser seems a little less comfortable in his own skin. The attention of both gentlemen is focused on the Vietnamese actress Đỗ Thị Hải Yến, an incredibly beautiful woman, who already impressed me with her title role in Chuyen cua Pao (2006).

It is set in a Saigon neighborhood where wealthy westerners used to live. Writer Graham Greene himself worked there as a correspondent in the early 1950s. The First Indochina War was a conflict between the French colonizer and the communists of Ho Chi Minh. Even then began the American interference, here called the Third Way, which is being denounced here.

The three main characters undergo a change. Fowler says in the beginning that he is neutral, but he is very clear when it comes down to it. Pyle comes across as smooth, sociable and idealistic, but becomes one of those responsible for a bloodbath. Phuong is pushed by her older sister to hook up with a wealthy Westerner, but turns out to have honest feelings.

Michael Caine underacts, it's like he's not acting. Brendan Fraser's vitality is a good contrast. Do Thi Hai Yen was a dancer. She may have had an eyelid correction. luckily they chose a real Vietnamese here. In the 1958 version, she was played by an Italian with makeup. In addition, the communists were then blamed for everything, much to Greene's dismay.

The crime story is well put together, with the asphalt on the legs of the boxer as a clue. The love triangle is treated without sentiment. During the murder there are crosscuts from the client to the victim and back. These elements, together with the various Vietnamese locations and the political conflict, make this a quality piece of work.

Gamble about an unknown film that just doesn't pay off. Because The Quiet American has a lot, only the balance and focus are not right, at least not in the way it would appeal to me.

Nice to say the least is the setting in the 1950s with the French trying to control Vietnam but slowly losing ground to the communists. The Asian atmosphere is strong, just like the shabby and chaotic image of a country in turmoil. Caine is also certainly good and the suspected interference of the American secret services who want to steer the already prevailing war in a direction that is interesting for American policy.

Where the film goes completely through the ice, especially the first hour, is the so-called love affair and battle for hand of Phuong. Such an element does not interest me at all in the midst of the basic principle of the Vietnam war, not to mention a country in chaos. GTST quality I call something like that, melodrama, and it doesn't fit at all as far as I'm concerned, it's just not interesting in the midst of the shitshow that is playing at that moment. Would you have liked to set up there and perhaps a more than fine film would have been created. Needless to say, Greene's tenet doesn't appeal to me.

The Quiet American is not particularly bad in that regard, it will be more the balance that does not appeal to me because romance is not my genre anyway. Frazier is not even that crazy, but another actor might have been a better sparring partner for Caine. Do Thi Hai Yen is still worth naming as a beautiful lady, but otherwise A Quiet American falls short for me and it stays with the time, the atmosphere and the political climate as far as the film is concerned.
