Having to spend the summer with relatives in Miami, Amiya Castle feels deeply abandoned by her mother. She comes face to face with unlikely circumstances. When Amiya is forced to explain her poor school grades, she recounts a summer fling she had with a young local crook. She also talks about her efforts to keep her drug-addicted mother alive. Her sisters, Nia and Tiana, are strongly attached to each other and do their utmost to get out of their hopeless situation of unemployment and welfare. The girls found themselves in this situation after their mother abandoned them. Nia and Tiana now live with the only relative who wants them in their home, Aunt Georgia, and they can finally hope for a better future for the first time in their young lives. After an unexpected death, the girls' friendship grows even closer...
