Unfortunately, The Lighthouse didn't captivate me as much as I expected.

I recognize that it is an insanely well made film by a brilliant director with crystal clear vision. The desolate atmosphere is palpable. The score is spooky. Dafoe and Patterson put down excellent acting performances. Eggers manages to transport you to the 1890s with ease, and the film clearly has multiple layers to delve into when revising. Nevertheless, the film didn't grab me completely because I simply couldn't empathize with the characters. I would have liked to have been part of the insanity, but I noticed that the distance between me and the film grew as the situation escalated.

I keep hoping that the penny will drop with a revision, as happened before with The VVitch (2015), but for now a slightly disappointed feeling prevails , as I expected this to be my movie of 2019.

The first, grab it, ten minutes, in which there was (almost) no speaking, I was immediately sucked into the film. The black-and-white 4:3 image nicely frames the drab lighthouse existence, while the fog horn roars in the background. (The call of the siren?) Atmospheric and mysterious.
Then the strong playing of the gentlemen begins to predominate. Defoe always plays with gusto. As for Pattinson, it took me a while to stop thinking about Twilight or Harry Potter. However: the further the film progresses, the more grim his character became and in the end he really won me over.
After the boat didn't arrive I noticed that I was no longer so fascinated by what was going on on the screen. A lot is still happening: the film reaches an absurdist climax, Defoe cranks up the sailor's talk even more. And yet I was secretly looking at my watch. It even occurred to me that if you drink along with the guys during the movie, you'll probably be better able to “grow with” the events. In the cinema with a bottle of iced green tea in that alone is not an option.

A 4:3 black-and-white artistic film about two men, I didn't really feel like it; this seemed like the kind of film that is played on a beamer in museums and where people in their sixties with scarves go wild. But this completely insane remake of David Lynch's Brokeback Mountain actually shocked me a lot. I was particularly pleasantly surprised by the light-hearted tone here and there, I had expected that the film would be very heavy for the entire running time. In addition, the two actors carry the film very well on their shoulders; Willem Dafoe in particular is perfect for a role like this. Furthermore, it is undoubtedly a film that you can think deeply about and philosophize about, but as far as I'm concerned the atmosphere - with excellent music and sound design - is actually enough. It will undoubtedly be a film that wants to tell a lot, but that is - fortunately as far as I am concerned - just a minor issue.

4 stars.
