The Jealous God plot

In an industrial Yorkshire town in the mid-1960s, Vincent Dungarven's mother wants him to become a priest. Vincent is a reserved young man, a teacher, and although he is already thirty, he has never been in love. Vincent has two older brothers, Matthew and Paul, who are both married and have children. One day he meets Laura in the library, which is new there. Impressed by her beauty and charm, he overcomes his shyness and asks her out. He falls madly in love with her, but because she is a Protestant, he is afraid that this will cause tension at home. Still, Vincent is over the moon until he meets Ruth, Laura's eccentric flatmate; she reveals a number of things about Laura, which completely upset him.
