Orphaned at a young age, Robert Shannon leaves his home in Ireland to travel to Langford, Scotland, to his grandparents' home. He grows up with his stingy grandfather, but his life is made bearable by his loving great-grandfather and grandmother and a kind aunt and uncle. He goes to school and befriends Gavin and Allison, whom he develops a deep love for as the years pass. He has a dream to study medicine and become a doctor. He gets the support of everyone in the family except his grandfather.
