The Crowded Day plot
The Christmas holidays are approaching and a number of saleswomen head for work at Bunting and Hobbs, a busy London department store. Peggy French is angry with her fiancé, the shopkeeper Leslie Randall, for refusing to sell his vintage car, which is taking up all his time and money. Peggy notes that they could get married and that he hasn't even bought an engagement ring yet. An argument ensues and Peggy breaks off the engagement. She also refuses to go to the staff party with Leslie, leading him to believe that she has a crush on HR manager Philip Stanton. The latter is indeed charmed by Peggy, but in reality he wants to keep his distance, because if he becomes too familiar with the saleswomen, it could cost him his job.
