The Constant Woman plot

Marlene Underwood is a famous circus performer, whose husband, Walt, buys the circus, while their son, Jimmie, adores everything his mother does. Marlene leaves them both to join a larger show, but is then killed in a fire, sending Walt into a downward spiral of alcohol and grief. A woman named Lou helps restore Walt's faith in human nature, but this is resented by young Jimmie, who feels she is trying to take his mother's place. Walt slowly recovers, but now must try to prevent Jimmie from joining the circus himself.
