Paul Dietrich (Richard Dreyfuss) is a pianist and recently placed 3rd in a piano competition in Cincinnati. He thinks about teaching but first wants to win the prestigious Hillman tournament. Among his opponents is the very talented Heidi (Amy Irving) with whom he slowly falls in love.
