A quarrel between Dmitri Karamazov and his father Fyodor is first about money, but later mainly about Groshenka. Both are in love with her. The controversy runs so deep that Dmitri announces that he is going to kill his father. Meanwhile, his diligent brother Aljosja runs from one place to another to assist everyone with good intentions and advice. His half-brother Ivan the lackey Smerdyakov, on the other hand, confuses others with his nihilistic theories of morality.
