"Shame is the mistress of this house and betrayal its master!"

Victoria Kowelska (Valentina Cortese) survived the bombing and internment camps during World War II and eventually emigrated to San Francisco Bay. Now she should be happy with her devoted husband (Richard Basehart) who lives with them in a mansion overlooking San Francisco Bay. But Victoria is not who she claims to be, her child belongs to someone else and her husband and housekeeper terrify her.
