Shortly after World War I, war veteran Matt Brady is offered an attractive job with the local government in a small town with the help of his brother and politician Tim Brady. When Tim dies, Matt takes over from his brother. He eventually takes on an important position in the government of the state. Although he has built a successful career, Matt has been unable to conquer Elsie Reynolds, whom he is in love with. Matt eventually marries Lorry Reed, whom he mistreats. Partly because of this, Matt becomes estranged from his best friend Bob Herrick. It looks like Matt is working towards his demise with his behavior.
