The American plot

Rich American Christopher Newman goes to Paris where he meets the young widow Claire de Cintré and falls in love with her. Christopher is captivated by the beautiful woman, but he is hindered by her protective family. With the help of Claire's brother and Mrs. Bread Christopher manages to visit the old Bellegarde house. He discovers a secret about Claire's mother, Madame de Bellegarde. As a result, he tries to get his beloved out of the clutches of her overprotected mother.
