The Amazing Grace plot

John Newton is the captain of a slave ship that docks at Calabar, on the coast of Nigeria. After filling his ship with slaves, he is on his way back when his ship is caught in a violent storm. He barely survives this and sees it as a sign from God. That moment changes his life, he becomes very religious and demands humane treatment of the slaves. He continues to trade in slaves, but becomes more and more involved with the Africans themselves.
