The Adventurer plot

John Adams, the son of a millionaire, poses as Jim, a slum dweller, to investigate a conspiracy to defraud the Adams Charitable Institute. He meets Dorothy Markham, a dishwasher, and they become friends after he dissuades her from committing suicide. Margaret, Jim's sister, discovers his cigarette case in Dorothy's apartment and accuses her of concealing Jim's whereabouts. After Dorothy is arrested, Margaret discovers that her guardian, Mortimer Wiley, is responsible for the plot to drain the Adams Institute of money.
