"Ruth was only good at getting into trouble and planning outrageous schemes. There seemed to be no end to her mischief until the day she actually did run away."

Ruth and her brother Philip have a summer of adventure with their strict Aunt Margaret. Ruth regularly gets into trouble with her recalcitrant behavior. Together with Philip she meets Terry, a poor boy who lives in the woods with his mother. She also befriends an old shepherd, who tries to answer all her questions and can teach her his wise life lessons.
