Talk Radio plot

"The last neighborhood in America."

Barry Champlain works at the Dallas radio station. In the nighttime he whips up his listeners with talk about controversial subjects and provokes heated discussions. He is both reviled and worshipped. When he gets the chance to swap the local channel for one with national coverage, he faces a turning point in his career. At the same time, however, the problems pile up: with his ex-wife, with the new radio station that wants to change the content of his show, with his listeners whom he sometimes drives to despair with his incendiary words and, finally, with a neo-Nazi group that threatens him.

In my opinion, it's one of the highlights of Oliver Stone's oeuvre, and perhaps even his best after The Doors. Stone has long been trying to portray contemporary America, and he's never gotten so close to his subject as in Talk Radio. With a wonderfully energetic visual and acting style, we spend several evenings in the radio studio of a provocative DJ, convincingly played by Eric Bogosian. With a superb eye for detail and many strong subtleties that make all the supporting characters believable, we become entangled in a web of opinions in which Bogosian is the target. Americans are strongly represented in both the callers and the managers, and they all contribute powerfully to the narrative. Talk Radio is nothing short of a masterpiece, and it's absurd that the film is so unknown.

An excellent film in which a popular DJ with a radio talk show rarely minces words. The best scenes are the simplest ones where the DJ addresses various listeners. It's still relevant, but with the advent of the internet, it takes on a different form. Eric Bogosian gives a strong performance, and the film is also based on his own play.

A captivating drama thriller with a compelling lead performance by Eric Bogosian. His engaging performance is perfectly suited to the character he portrays, making it easy for Talk Radio to draw the viewer to the screen. The rapid pace at which events unfold is also a positive. This is an especially strong choice, as the production budget was clearly modest and limited to a small number of locations. Towards the second half, the screenplay begins to take on a somewhat inhuman quality, with theatrical writing and a needlessly forced sense of drama. This detracts from the realistic, sensationalist approach, but director Oliver Stone demonstrates his ability to effectively execute all sorts of premise.
