Take Shelter plot

"Far away from the cruel world."

Curtis LaForche lives in a small Ohio town with his wife Samantha and daughter Hannah, a 6-year-old deaf girl. When Curtis has terrifying dreams, he keeps the visions to himself. He tries to quell his fear by obsessively building a storm bunker in his backyard. His seemingly inexplicable behavior causes confusion in those around him, but the resulting tensions in his marriage and community are dwarfed by what his dreams really mean...

Hugely undervalued. Beautiful film with tight, clear dialogues. No weird characters. A very realistic whole. We can speak of a topper here. I am clearly sensitive to these kinds of films, films that can be interpreted in several ways. The symbolism is beautifully incorporated into this movie making it one of the better movies I've seen in recent times. The acting is also terrifyingly good. So I can't help but give this one a place in my top 10. Really great.

“Is anyone seeing this?”

Atmospheric movie. Sometimes very slow, but with excellent acting by Shannon and Chastain. Shannon's hallucinations are highly done, and the interplay between him and Chastain is wonderful to watch. With the scene in the bunker as an outlier. But those are big bright spots in an otherwise painfully slow two-hour film. It's a shame that director Nichols can't keep the tension tight, and he could have cut something. But the last part (with a fittingly ambiguous ending) left me with a satisfying feeling about Take Shelter.

Are you okay?

Yeah...yeah...I'm fine.

It's now my turn for the third time and I like this slowly built drama more and more. The first time the film didn't really convince me, but by means of foreknowledge I can appreciate the whole and the skill with which this film was made.

The story may be familiar with Curtis not exactly having soft dreams and clearly getting paranoia about what might happen next. What I find particularly strong about the film is the slow pace in which the time is taken to let the 'normal' life of this man slowly collapse and everything around him slowly derails. He does strange things, alienating friends and the fact that there is mental illness in the family gives an extra mysterious twist to the whole thing. The dreams are worthy of goosebumps, the scene at the neighborhood lunch is poignant and almost vulnerable and yet shows Shannon as an outstanding actor. Chastain is always nice both in terms of acting and view to finally mention the soundtrack and if I'm asked to mention a bad point about Take Shelter I really can't. I really can't say anything bad about this movie.

Take Shelter can therefore be called an excellent psychological drama in which it is clear that something is not right. And that psychic interplay between delusion and reality is beautifully kept in limbo. And the slow pace, criticized by many, suits the film very well in my opinion. Finally, to mention Michael Shannon who first struck me in Pearl Harbor and who played a not exactly bright role. But Shannon has now shed that image and in the meantime Shannon has won two Oscar nominations with Nocturnal Animals and Revolutionary Road and should have been recognized for the role as Curtis LaForge.
