Potentially rich but somewhat poorly developed film. In terms of subject and starting point, it somehow reminded me of Dans Ma Peau. Woman with a morbid obsession that soon evolves into a form of self-mutilation. Only the raw edges of that film are really missing here. Despite a few actually nasty moments, the film remains a bit caught in a good drama/arthouse straitjacket. Both in terms of content and style.

It is also a pity that the in itself fascinating subject ultimately mainly serves as a motif/metaphor for a rather dull story about a rape trauma. A lot of attention to underlying psychological motives, but the cues are not very subtle and it all feels very predictable. Add a pretty idiotic ending to that and you have a movie that has a few memorable scenes, but otherwise misses the mark.

Also get a little tired of those drama films that flirt with the horror genre, but mainly use it metaphorically to supposedly appear more layered or intelligent. This kinda falls into that category for me. 2*.

Nice.

Stylish and idiosyncratic drama, with some light thriller and horror touches. Especially in the first part, in which it is all just a bit more mysterious and Bennett's actions are also a bit more difficult to place. The puzzle pieces fall into place fairly quickly.

The direction is beautiful and refined, the acting is also more than fine. Fortunately, because this film mainly relies on the drama and then you have quite a few good actors available. It is a bit strange to see Rasche at work (for me it will always be Sledge Hammer), but fortunately his role is not too big.

The only downside I found was that the connection between the first part and the second part is not very strong. The rape story actually feels rather redundant (the way she was treated in her relationship seemed to me reason enough for her behavior and from the moment she fled[ /spoiler], the direction is also slightly less tight, but I found the finale itself beautiful and fitting.

Still a separate film and a pretty nice discovery, but don't expect to see a horror or thriller, because then you will be disappointed.

Caught in your own head

Nice psychological drama with thriller elements, where the focus is, as it were, on a character study. Namely, what is the underlying suffering of Hunter (the main character) who seems to have a seemingly perfect life, but suffers from an eating disorder related to swallowing life-threatening objects? It soon becomes clear that Hunter is a prisoner of her own mental prison, which causes her to experience a constant sense of oppression, which is reflected in this compulsive eating disorder.

You can probably tell from my first paragraph; this is not a film that you put on on a Saturday night, during Halloween, with a group of friends as part of an alternative selection. Swallow is certainly alternative, but the Arthouse vibe that is given off will not be to everyone's liking. Criticisms that progress is too slow, or that there is simply too little happening in this setting are almost inevitable. In the right circumstances, and with the right expectations (don't expect a horror or thriller) the chances are a lot higher that this psychodrama can enter you and really make an impact.
