Reasonable film set in a family's house in the late 1960s. A dysfunctional family which makes for a rather wry humor. As the story progresses, the tone gets a bit darker. This film marked the debut for both Carice van Houten and Michiel Huisman, who are currently both able to set foot in Hollywood.

For me, Koolhoven was a bit of the man of interchangeable book adaptations. Early in his career he appears to have had much more bravado and the urge to experiment. Suzy Q is a hyper-styled gem. Koolhoven plays with the bright colors of giallo and the shadow play, crazy sets of German expressionism. It has a similar absurdist theme to that of Alex van Warmerdam: villainous characters who are at each other's death as a hyperbole of Dutch petty bourgeoisie. It's also nice to see the crème de la crème of this generation of actors/actresses as very young chicks. If Brimstone to be released this year is not inferior in playfulness and cinephilia, I foresee that 'our Koolhoven' could turn out to be a real stunner.
