Stuart: A Life Backwards plot
A curious friendship develops between Stuart Shorter, an alcoholic drifter with a violent past, and writer and welfare worker Alexander Masters. Masters becomes intrigued by Shorter's life story and asks if he can write his biography. Shorter decides that this has to be reversed as 'an exciting Tom Clancy story'. And so we see in reverse chronology how Stuart's life has ended up in a negative spiral.

Nice.
Although the friendship doesn't always seem 'real' to me, the film does. From the beginning you feel sorry for the tormented Stuart, although I am also happy with a modest character like the writer.
The ending could have been one scene shorter, so that the film would have stopped at the beginning.
With Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch, this film has two acting cannons. I have to say that - considering their other films - I prefer Cumberbatch's more subtle acting than Hardy's physical acting; here the two come together perfectly. Without Cumberbatch I would not have enjoyed Hardy and without Hardy I would not have enjoyed Cumberbatch.
In terms of look, this inevitably reminds of television work. Not that that is so illogical, of course. What is a pity is the music, which at a few moments goes on the sentimental tour, something the film did not need.

Good film about a man who wants to write a book about a homeless man. Based on a true story, this film sometimes lacks direction. Tom Hardy convinces in a strong role as the wandering sociopath. Benedict Cumberbatch also does a fine job, but his role is a lot less captivating.
