Will I eventually have to adjust my opinion about Van Groeningen? With The Broken Circle Breakdown (seriously, does this really deserve all the Oscar hype and so on?) and The Unfortunately Der Dingen (making such a great book into such an average film is anything but a feat) he couldn't convince me, Dagen Zonder Lief was just really bad.

But his debut touched me. Very natural representation of searching people. People who don't exactly know what to do with their lives and then go looking for fellow sufferers who don't know either. And who, often without realizing it, push themselves ever deeper into a certain environment.

I thought the acting was fine, Heldenbergh has disappointed me more than surprised, but I think he's fine in this one. From the very green Opel Kadet story he took me into his way of thinking. De Voogdt and Bafort also play their part well. I was able to pull off some of the visual flair that hangs over the film as well.

For me by far his best work, although I have yet to watch Belgica.

Steve + Sky, a film from the early career of Felix van Groeningen when he was not yet known to the general public with The sadness of things or The broken circle breakdown. The film suited me just a little less than mentioned toppers, but Van Groeningen also shows his talent here.

A film with a grainy structure with the necessary creativity in which scenes are repeated and not edited chronologically, especially the first part of the film is bursting with the idiosyncrasy of Van Groeningen. That's also because of the twisted interesting characters. Delfine Bafort is a purebred, very natural performance, but Heldenbergh and De Voogdt are also doing well. They too still prove today that they are excellent actors.

Steve + Sky is a film that has put Van Groeningen on the map and pushed the Flemish film past Verheyen. It is this road that Verheyen had to take after his excellent film Alles Moet Weg (Film, 1996)...

The debut film by Felix Van Groeningen, which, together with Any Way the Wind Blows, created a new wind in Flemish cinema in the early 21st century. I read somewhere a reference to the French film 37°2 Le Matin from 1986 and even though this is a different film, it reminds me of that. Steve (Titus De Voogdt, who made his feature film debut with Any Way the Wind Blows) and Sky (top model/actress Delfine Bafort in her debut) are colorful and lively figures. In a world in which people live from day to day and the environment is quite small and the future is even shorter, love grows very burgeoning.

The wonderfully chaotic atmosphere is further emphasized by the music of the De Waele brothers. And cinematography of Ruben Impens in his first feature film, he would later do even more beautiful things like The Broken Circle Breakdown, Belgica, Grave and Titane.
