Vet Larry Hanrahan himself catches anthrax by treating cows with anthrax, which he ignores a call from top horse breeder and friend Rory Teller to come and treat her thoroughbred champion and award-winning stallion. Rory is so annoyed at what she calls a light and short-sighted affair that she considers accepting a marriage proposal from the sweet talker and writer Stephen Purcell. But when she learns the real cause of the seriousness of Larry's condition, she makes a drastic decision: she herself will treat the dying vet with the same serum he uses to inoculate the cattle.
