Bruno Hansen is a bridge operator at a large lifting bridge in Hamburg. One day, his seven-year-old deaf-mute son climbs into the forbidden area of the lifting equipment as a train approaches. Bruno must now choose between sacrificing his son and sinking a packed train into the river.
