"Edna Ferber's epic of American Womanhood"

Selina lives in a wealthy, protected environment, until suddenly her mother dies and she moves with her father to Chicago. When he also dies, Selena is penniless. She moves in with a farming family of Dutch immigrants to teach their son there. This eventually leads to a romance and they have a hefty son, Dirk, who is nicknamed So Big.
