Ellen Peterson (Judy Holliday) is a Brooklyn operator who tries to improve the lives of her clients by passing information on to other clients. She falls in love with the voice of one of her clients Frank Moss (Dean Martin) and is determined to meet him. The only problem is that she pretends to be an old woman on the phone and he calls her mom.
