A small but fine drama by Kurosawa, in which he once again uses his regular cast Toshirô Mifune and Takashi Shimura. Two very fine actors, who play their role as doctors well. Mifune in particular is very convincing as a sympathetic doctor, who contracts syphilis. A role in which he shows that he can also play a subdued character well. I did think that it was not very clearly explained why Mifune did not wear gloves during the conscious intervention on the patient. Whether the risk was too great, or if he simply forgot the gloves, which caused him to contract the disease, remains unclear.

Still, the most beautiful role of the film is reserved for Noriko Sengoku. She plays a nurse, who initially looks quite unsympathetic. As the movie progresses, her character develops in a beautiful way. Especially the scene where attacks the man who infected Mifune is very beautiful. I also thought the second half was clearly better than the first. There, Kurosawa sometimes doesn't seem to quite know where he wants to go with the story. In the second half, that doubt is completely gone, and the characters also develop more.

Certainly not bad. Without the slightly lesser first half, this could have been very good. That was unfortunately not in it, but it is nevertheless quite pleasant viewing.

3.5*

Clearly a lesser film by Kurosawa, anyway the least I've seen from him so far. Pretty dated too. Partly because of the subject that was apparently quite a problem in Japan at the time, which causes enormous embarrassment but is incomprehensible to the viewer today (and Kurosawa does not really make this palpable), on the other hand, the film also looks dated. Many scenes that were obviously shot in the studio, for example, but the acting doesn't always help either. Mifune still does a reasonable job, Shimura has a nice role anyway, but Manjo in particular is much too theatrical for such a drama. And she must be (with Mifune) the heart of the film. The pace is still okay and every now and then there is a nice shot and something of an atmosphere is created with the constant rain, but that is not enough to give a satisfactory score. 2.5*.
