Sometimes you decide to watch a movie because you heard good things about it. And sometimes because you appreciate a certain actor or director. Secret Ceremony falls into the latter category. Joseph Losey had already made a name for himself with the anti-war classic The Boy With Green Hair (1948) and the cult film Modesty Blaise (1966) when he made this psychological drama.

An unstable girl, Cenci (Mia Farrow), thinks she sees her dead mother in an elderly prostitute, Leonora (Elizabeth Taylor). Leonora takes the opportunity to come to terms with her daughter's death, and to perhaps take some things from Cenci's house. Everything seems fine until Cenci's stepfather (Robert Mitchum, with a horrible Chriet Titulaer beard) throws a spanner in the works, venting his incestuous feelings on Cenci.

Secret Ceremony is pretentious in everything. The story, the acting and the direction, it seems that everything has to be as over the top as possible and "shocking" that it becomes laughable. It also comes across as corny today, the way the actors bring the dialogues.

No Unfortunately. With Secret Ceremony, Joseph Losey didn't make me happy, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and keep an eye on him.
