Six months after young Lawrence's mother remarries Malcolm and they move to a new home, she dies in an accident. Malcolm is having a hard time and finds that he cannot take care of Lawrence. He arranges for Lawrence to be placed in an orphanage. In their final days together over the Christmas season, Malcolm bonds with Lawrence and realizes he's made a mistake.
