Rosetta plot

Rosetta is set in the underclass of a former industrial area in Wallonia where unemployment has risen to unprecedented levels. On a desolate campsite, 18-year-old Rosetta lives with her alcoholic mother, who allows herself to be used by all kinds of men for money and beer. Rosetta hates her mother and hates the whole world. She has only one goal: to leave the campsite and live like 'normal' people. Rosetta is risking everything... even the friendship with her only friend.

Great movie, I was immediately drawn into the story. The fact that the camera is so close to it (so you don't see much) helps with that, you always have to pay attention to understand what she is doing. The moment she puts on different shoes felt like her boundary between her outside world and her private sphere.

While this is a movie, such families do exist, where the child is for some reason more sensible/skilled than the problem parent(s) and tries to keep the family going, which is far too much of a task for someone in that capacity. age. Duquenne plays that role wonderfully.

The ending did feel a bit tacky. Someone who has been fighting for so long, maybe not used to it, doesn't give up so easily, especially not when she just got a job. Then I would rather have had a really open ending where the image just goes black, without attempting suicide. Incidentally, I had also overlooked that attempt, the sound was not loud enough so that the hiss could not be heard and then you did not notice it.

I found the unbalanced way she treats her 'boyfriend' a bit too bold. I don't want to believe that she can't always control herself in such a situation, but she doesn't seem like such a bitch that she lets him drown or takes his work away, then she would also have let her mother choke a long time ago. It's not impossible, but it does seem a bit exaggerated to me. However, those scenes do contribute to the oppressive atmosphere of the film
.

First Dardennes film (out of five) that failed to captivate me. There was also very little fascinating material in this time, otherwise this is yet another social drama about trying to escape poverty. I have to say that I'm getting tired of that "realistic style" too. One thinks it's genius, but I didn't like the jerky camera work the most. It's absurd that such films win festival awards.

Rosetta is one of the best of the Dardenne brothers. Long ago, it was compulsory at school, just like La promesse. The Dardennes often use the same themes around social deprivation, often in combination with a run-down neighborhood and vulnerability. It does not give a nice picture of Belgium. In Rosetta - and you can take that literally - we follow a girl who wishes to escape her reality. She grows up without a father along with her alcoholic mother. She lives in a dilapidated caravan somewhere in a small bush along a busy road. The camera is very close to it and sucks the viewer into Rosetta's story.

It presents a penetrating portrait of a young lady who hates her life and wishes to exchange her hopeless existence for a normal life. She goes to great lengths to find a job, for her the way to get ahead. It provides a certain moral in the film: 'whoever works hard (and honestly) will get there'.

Emilie Dequenne does an excellent job and identifies with Rosetta. Almost natural identification with her role. Rightly crowned at the time as best actress in Cannes. Olivier Gourmet is always ok and is a frequent guest in the films of the Dardennes.
