With a subject in which death and how people deal with it are central, a beautiful film can be made about it. Especially when it comes to a young woman who is terminally ill and has only three months to live. But... then one has to come up with a good credible story and not with such a nonsense story with, among other things, a ghost of a Japanese kamikaze pilot. Now what the hell is this all about? The moment that Hiroshi made his appearance, it was already impossible for me to empathize with the main characters, despite the good acting of the rather attractive Annabel. Then there are even more scenes - the conflict between Annabel and Enoch, for example - that don't seem very credible. Too bad, a lot more could have been done with this. Some romantic scenes - including Annabel kissing Enoch tenderly - were quite beautiful. Now what remains in my opinion is a very disappointing film that I had expected a lot from.

An emotional and long-winded story about two teenagers who accidentally cross their paths and can no longer be separated. It remained unclear to me why Enoch went to all those funerals; it was not explained whether he was depressed or had lost a loved one. He runs into Annabelle on one of these occasions. I don't know her haircut was a result of her illness but it suited her. She had one of those faces that you just want to sink your teeth into, out of 'frustration' at that unbelievable beauty. I didn't think the Japanese pilot added much and he seemed mainly built in to break the romantic routine. I also found Enoch to be somewhat condescending with him and despite their time together they didn't seem to be having much fun. I thought the Halloween scene was way too childish compared to the rest; I thought only toddlers went door-to-door to pick up candy. Furthermore, a few short activities such as attending an ice hockey game or sitting in a tree with binoculars made the whole appear somewhat succinct and fragmented.

It just kept on babbling like that and just like with Finding Forrester, I notice that the characteristic quirkiness of Van Sant was, roughly speaking, absent.

Mediocre film about a boy who randomly visits funerals and meets a girl there. In itself an unoriginal love story. Somewhat distinctive because of the emphatically present death. But the story and the characters lack some spice and focus, and it is therefore a bit on the boring side.
