It is Christopher Lee who makes this Hammer film somewhat bearable. His interpretation of Rasputin is memorable and perhaps one of his best acting performances. Otherwise, it is pretty much a sorry state of affairs. It never really gets exciting, and it is certainly not atmospheric. Almost everything is filmed indoors, and we don't see much of Russia. A shame. So, my journey through the Hammer universe has not yet yielded a masterpiece. On to The Reptile.

2.5*

A fine film, starring a mad monk who believes that everything he undertakes is perfectly acceptable. How do they say it again? "The pitcher goes to the well so often that it breaks."

Finally saw it and got exactly what I expected: incredibly strong acting from Lee. He clearly seemed to enjoy playing his role. Furthermore, the director skillfully emphasizes his eyes. The staring gaze effectively accentuates the insanity. The sets might be a bit minimalist, but I didn't find that particularly distracting.
