A young bourgeois in Parma opposes his milieu by opting for communism. After the suicide of a friend and a passionate affair with a young aunt, he realizes - despite the influence of an idealistic teacher - that he cannot really break free from his roots and gives up the engagement and marries a burgher girl chosen by his parents.
