Leos Carax is clearly not my director. With the exception of Les Amants Du Pont-Neuf, his films do not appeal to me.
I like to look for motives behind the characters' actions, but why Pierre gives up his comfortable existence to go and live and work on the fringes of Paris with his (alleged) half-sister is absolutely a mystery to me.
But actually, that goes for the whole film. I've been watching the self-destruction of a talented writer. But what his motives are? I really have no idea.
I do wonder if Carax was perhaps a bit semi-autobiographical. He had already said goodbye to his "muse" Juliette Binoche (the Lucie figure?) for some time, who had to make room in his bed for Yekaterina Golubeva (herself?).
Be that as it may, this movie is clearly not my thing.
Finally, a sad coincidence: the two main actors (Depardieu and Golubeva) both died at a relatively young age.

Not really a fan of French films, but this is a surprisingly good film about a promising young writer whose life is destroyed by a woman who claims to be his sister. Superb acting by all actors in this pitch-black story. Striking appearance by Catherine Deneuve, although her role is probably the least interesting in the scenario. 3.5 stars

Pierre or the ambiguity, attempt 10.
Quite an obscure and avant-garde film of which only the ambiguity really succeeds. That is, until you make even the slightest effort to understand the story, and for that, it is perhaps actually best to simply read Herman Melville's book.
Depardieu fils is strong, convincing with his hurried and tormented appearance and accompanying manner of movement. And Delphine Chuillot in the same way, but I was perhaps a little less impressed by Yekaterina Golubeva.
In terms of style, I see quite a few parallels with LADPN, and whether that is really a positive thing is not exactly a simple question. However, the locations are brilliantly beautiful, and the band that is rehearsing/playing is also very nice.
