Pola X plot
"An erotically charged descent into madness."
The young wealthy Pierre has written a successful novel under a pseudonym. When he encounters the mysterious Isabelle in a dark forest, she tells him to be his sister. Pierre takes care of Isabelle, who grew up as a bastard. To this end, he breaks with his luxurious world and together they settle in Paris, where Pierre seems to be looking for the dark side of life.

Leos Carax is clearly not my director. With the exception of Les Amants Du Pont-Neuf, his films do not appeal to me.
I like to look for motives behind the characters' actions, but why Pierre gives up his comfortable existence to go and live and work on the fringes of Paris with his (alleged) half-sister is absolutely a mystery to me.
But actually, that goes for the whole film. I've been watching the self-destruction of a talented writer. But what his motives are? I really have no idea.
I do wonder if Carax was perhaps a bit semi-autobiographical. He had already said goodbye to his "muse" Juliette Binoche (the Lucie figure?) for some time, who had to make room in his bed for Yekaterina Golubeva (herself?).
Be that as it may, this movie is clearly not my thing.
Finally, a sad coincidence: the two main actors (Depardieu and Golubeva) both died at a relatively young age.

Not really a fan of French films, but this is a surprisingly good film about a promising young writer whose life is destroyed by a woman who claims to be his sister. Superb acting by all actors in this pitch-black story. Striking appearance by Catherine Deneuve, although her role is probably the least interesting in the scenario. 3.5 stars
