Pallieter plot
After a physical and psychological breakdown, a young man is taken by a friend to his sister, who takes care of him. After he is back to his old self, he decides to start a new life and also takes a new name; Pallieter. He lives in freedom, and does what he wants and enjoys life where he represses reality.

Top films in Flanders are not exactly a combination that always coincides. Our country is too small, and due to smaller budgets and the problem of constantly fishing in the same pond of actors, you get many films that are enjoyable to watch as a Fleming, but are by now dated.
This Pallieter falls under the series of film adaptations of Flemish classics, giving you a frequent Bokrijk vibe. The peasant genre is a typical Flemish film genre with a lot of *g***verdommes* in it.
Pallieter is actually a nice story, thanks to the book. And fortunately, that helps the film a great deal. And unlike a Conscience, you get a more lively story than a chauvinistic epic. In themselves, these films are still good for putting forgotten Flemish writers back in the spotlight. Although I don't know if those writers are happy with so many film adaptations. 
Pallieter is a pleasant film and one of the better peasant films from that era. It might be a problem for the Dutch due to the dialect, but that actually makes it closer to the Flemish. It is also a bit of a historical story about a young man who wants to enjoy freedom and independence, which was not a given in those days.

One of my favorite books, indeed outdated, just as Shakespeare's royal dramas, Dante's Descent into the Inferno, and Remarque's battlefields are outdated—it is remarkable that people still read those books. Becoming one with nature, the slow pace of life, the inner stillness—perhaps those are things that resonate somewhere after all. Of course, Eddy Brugman looks different from the Pallieter in my head (at least considerably slimmer than the Burgundian bon vivant from my imagination), but in itself, he is actually not a bad choice at all, and Marieke and Charlot are also excellently cast. The rest of the acting and the "non-ambient" tone of the dialogue fit entirely with the style of the 70s but are not distracting, and thanks to the zest for life, irreverence, and cheerfulness of the story (as in the book), the spaciousness of the landscape, and the warm colors of the cinematography (certainly in the beautifully restored DVD version), this film is brought to life for me in a striking way.
A personal note here is that the priest is played by Joris Diels (1903-1992), a Flemish actor and director who worked at the Haagse Comedie from 1955 as director and artistic director. In the 1970s, I had the privilege of meeting him once at his home in Scheveningen; a charming and inspiring man who could speak like no other about what moved him. It is wonderful to see him here again, almost a memento of that one evening from more than 40 years ago.

Now that those Flemish (farmer) classics are being added to Netflix, I intend to watch them one by one. I saw a large number of them on VHS a long time ago. I also wonder if there is actually a market for this on Netflix. Not from abroad, I think, but young people probably aren't waiting for this either.
Usually I don't mind the theatrical, formal Dutch with the occasional curse, but it didn't appeal to me as much. Perhaps also because the story didn't resonate with me as much. A film adaptation of a book by Felix Timmermans; not badly done for that, but it didn't do much for me. The plot revolves around a man who moves from the city to the countryside after a tragedy and discovers there, too, that the wealthy nobility calls the shots. We are presumably talking about the late 19th or early 20th century. However, Pallieter, which is a sort of nickname, is not impressed.
After the skirmishes with the rich, there is also room for intimate happiness with his Marieke. All a bit tame. It lacked some punch for me. All in all solid, but a bit too mediocre.
