Offline plot

After a prison sentence of 7 years, Rudy Vandekerckhove has a clear goal in mind; he wants to get back to work as a washing machine repairman and - more importantly - he hopes to reconcile with the family he left behind. However, despite the support of retired hairdresser Denise and his friend Rachid, neither plan is a success. Just when a reunion finally seems in sight, the past once again takes over and Rudy faces the most difficult decision of his life.

Beautiful film in which a man returns to his hometown after 7 years in prison. A raw drama with a strong story that unfolds little by little. The last scene is certainly moving, but it does form a somewhat frustrating ending. An excellent cast and an atmospheric soundtrack provided by Triggerfinger.

Both with Le ciel Flamand and with this Offline, Peter Monsaert has already moved to create strong, captivating dramas. I'd say I'm already looking forward to a new movie from him. In his debut film Offline you are presented with a raw and at the same time honest drama in which Rudy, a recently released detainee, is released and tries again to take his place in society. The question that remains is whether he succeeds in this.

The reason why Rudy ended up in prison is kept secret for a long time and triggers the viewer to look further. There's something mysterious about Rudy and it's not always because of his fickle demeanor of dejection and softness. You build a certain sympathy with the character and you want to see him integrate into society until you find out why he ended up in jail. This fact comes like a boomerang in your face and it may be difficult for some to feel any sympathy for him.

Will Willaert does an excellent job and is perfect for this raw role. But also Anemone Vlacke (beautiful lady who is together with the singer Jan Paternoster of Black Box Revelation) and Patricia Goemaere play very strong roles. The contacts between Rudy and his daughter are intense and sincere, only the medium with which this happens is different. It's the only means of communication that works for Rudy. Triggerfinger's music is perfect for the film. Hard when necessary, soft when possible, a bit like Rudy's character. Offline is a film about forgiveness and relationships. A film that stays with you, beautiful!

A week of stormy weather this week. According to the weather forecaster typically Belgian and so I take a Belgian film as an aperitif to feel the mood. Offline may not have blown me away as much as the storm but it was close. I do like these kinds of movies in which life is not a commercial but gray and sad and in which people make wrong choices and communicate badly. Peter Monsaert opts for a straight forward approach, namely about the feelings of people in crisis. Honest, ambiguous (is Willaert good or bad?) and fortunately also a bit tragically comical. Too bad all this is en rapprochement from father to daughter. But the local color of people in the marginalized area (except the ex) is striking (Café De Viking - how did you find this, Peter? - better than the hairdresser, right), well-chosen locations (this indeed anonymously desolate apartment building on the Muide eg) create the right atmosphere. The title offline ? There are indeed 2 worlds, the offline world where everything goes wrong and the online world where everything goes right (it is no coincidence that communication in the online world creates a bond between father and daughter). But perhaps the film could have been a bit more ambitious and given this fact more attention as a commentary on interaction between people. Then the theme (difficult integration for people on the side of society) was cast in a broader context. The end ? Well, I think open ending is the easiest way. Opting for an end (reconciliation, destruction, etc), would have been better for me. But that doesn't take away from the fact that the film is a powerful reflection - and fantastically supported by the music score by Triggerfinger - of people who get against the wind (that storm week anyway!) when they search for happiness and then (almost) give up.
