O Canto do Mar plot

In the arid regions of northeastern Brazil, migrants travel in search of a better place to live. Some go to Recife to catch a boat south. An old washerwoman lives in the poor neighborhood of Recife, who struggles to support her family. Her husband, a former sailor, has gone mad after being hit by the mast of a sailboat. The eldest son works at a grocer and sells fruit on the street to save money for a trip south with his girlfriend.
