Story of a family who cycle across Brazil to find paid work for the father in Rio de Janeiro and a better life for all. They begin their journey inland from Paraíba in the impoverished northeast. Obstinate, illiterate truck driver Romao feels that his destiny is to earn a thousand real a month - a decent amount by Brazilian standards. Romao needs that amount to support his wife Rose and five children, including a rebellious teenager and a baby. Obsessed with this idea, the family sets off on four bicycles. In six months they cover 3,200 kilometers, suffer hunger and thirst, encounter indifference and solidarity and get to know strange religious customs and exuberant celebrations of the unknown Brazil.
