London, early 1950s. Ada Harris [Lesley Manville] earns a living as a housekeeper in the hope that her husband, who went missing during World War II, will one day return to her. When she receives news that her husband has been killed during the war, it turns out that she has retroactive effect on a widow's pension. With the money she decides to chase a dream and personally buy a dress at Dior in Paris. With the beautiful camera work and the visual references to film classics from the 1950s, Fabian manages to evoke a certain sense of nostalgia, but the screenplay is overflowing with sentimentality and predictability. Starts well, but from the moment the story moves to Paris it is only thanks to Manville's sober, sympathetic interpretation of Mrs Harris that this does not fall completely through the cracks.

Film based on the book by Paul Gallico. Director and co-writer Anthony Fabian leaves the story as it is. The time in which it is set is still the 1950s and, apart from some light references to social inequality, the film is mainly a sugary sweet fairy tale. The story is sweet and surreal. If you behave well, then happiness will come naturally to you. That's the message.

The film wants to give the viewer a sense of well-being. You do get that feeling in Mrs. Harris' world. The woman who only meets well-intentioned people. The woman who with her kindness inspires people to selfless behavior. It's superficial kitsch.

The tragicomedy about a cleaning lady who goes to Paris to buy a Dior dress is otherwise empty, but looks nice. The cast is enjoyable. The musics are nice. The setting looks nostalgic. The camera work makes for friendly shots. At the end I was full of pleasure. Mission accomplished.
