Moffie plot

In 1981, 16-year-old Nicholas van der Swart is called up for military service in the South African army. The country is currently in conflict with neighboring Angola and the relentless training prepares the boys to defend the border. He finds friendship with Dylan Stassen, but can hardly answer his feelings, all the more because there is no place for a 'moff' in the army.

Seems like an anti-army-and-war film to me. The degrading training that ruthlessly wipes away personal feelings and emotions, the life-threatening warfare where the taking of a human life is not so directly a heroic act but leaves traces on the peace of mind and, finally, the doubts that survive in the individual with the question of whether he really still can be himself.

Seen from this perspective, a good, substantive film

The film title Moffie, which indeed means disrespectful fagot, is explicitly mentioned and explained at least once in the film. This during the roll call of the recruits when the sergeant appoints them publicly. The first part of the film is indeed the strongest. Towards the end the film watered down a bit. The training of the soldiers was one that we have seen several times in war films: perseverance, humiliation, shouting and ranting... genre Full metal jacket to name just one.

What I found most shocking was the passage at the train station where the black traveler was taunted and spat at by an overcrowded train. If you know why they are trained, namely to teach the black communists in Angola a lesson, the hatred and racism are deeply rooted.

Overall, a decent to good film. Definitely worth picking up and one that sticks around because of its sometimes confrontational moments.

Heavy film with little room for some humor or lightheartedness.

The film itself is well made. The boys are playing quite strong.

It's a pity that the ending is rather rushed. They could have put a little more time into that with a more cheerful ending. The film is quite depressing.
