Potentially a truly beautiful film about the struggles of finding your way when a parent dies at a young age. Gene Hackman delivers a superb performance, with Henry Thomas and Huckleberry Fox as his sons and the beautiful Maureen Kerwin as their love interest. Stunning location shots, and a wonderful supporting cast that delivers excellent work.
The film's only merciless downfall is the dragging, overly dramatic music that, from the very first minute, gives you the impression you're watching the closing credits of a Hallmark drama, and that someone has just died very, very tragically. Because of this, the film works so poorly for me that it's impossible to watch it normally.
Has the film been misunderstood? Perhaps, but mainly by the filmmakers.
