Million Dollar Babies plot

May 1934. The poor family of Oliva (Roy Dupuis) and Elzire (Céline Bonnier) struggles to survive, like almost everyone else in Northern Ontario's small farming community. Elzire, who has already given birth to five children, is pregnant again. This time there are complications during the pregnancy and in the eighth month she gives birth to quintuplets. According to her doctor Allan (Beau Bridges), the babies don't stand a chance of survival, but to everyone's surprise, the five girls make it through the first night without any problems. This begins the exploitation of the quintuplets, which are toured as a landmark at fairgrounds and fairs across Canada. The girls are not allowed to return to their parents until they are nine years old.
