As long as their other halves are at the front in Afghanistan, the women left behind on the military base try to engage in joint activities just to have some distraction. Organizer Lisa [Sharon Horgan] wants to keep it simple but the experienced and somewhat meddlesome Kate [Kirstin Scott Thomas] soon tries to take control. When the women decide to start a choir together, Lisa and Kate must work together as best they can to ensure that the choir gives all members the distraction they need.

Comic drama follows a familiar formula but avoids the associated pitfalls. The characters are well developed, there is a good chemistry between the women and screenwriters Rachel Tunnard and Rosanne Flynn have a keen eye for the power of music as an emotional outlet and for the obvious solidarity between these military women. The musical development of the choir is credibly worked out and provides the right dose of enlightening humor - the karaoke version of New Order's World In Motion is a highlight. The performances of Only You and True Colors, among others, are sung with enough feeling and conviction to regularly give you a lump in your throat.

Despite a number of dramatic moments, a good-feeling film about a group of wives of front-line soldiers who want to take their mind off things by forming a choir; an initiative that later received widespread imitation. Mutual tensions cannot prevent solidarity from predominating. A British film through and through.

Nice film about a group of women whose partners are sent on a military mission. A solid film with a smile and a tear, but which never really excels. The course is somewhat predictable, but the somewhat difficult relationship between the two women is well portrayed by Kristin Scott Thomas and Sharon Horgan.
