Midnight plot

Edna Morris, daughter of William Morris, American ambassador to a South American country, is persuaded to enter into a hasty marriage with George Potter, an embassy attaché. That same day, George is threatened with arrest for embezzlement and escapes by jumping into the bay. He is believed to have drowned. Edna's father resigns, and they return to their American home. Senator Dart and his son Jack are staying at an adjacent estate. Edna falls in love with Jack, and their engagement is announced. George returns and attempts to blackmail Edna's father, who subsequently forbids Edna and Jack's marriage.
