Mercy Street plot

1862. Mary Phinney is an abolitionist-minded widow and countess who rejects a life of pomp and circumstance to work as a nurse at Union Army Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia. The clear-talking and moralistic Mary, quickly finds herself in a whirlwind of chaos, where politics and philosophies take second place to the filth, malnutrition and crude medical practices of war. Mary teams up with Samuel Diggs, a northern black man born in freedom and doing first-rate work as a nurse. But she is not respected because of her gender and he is belittled because of his race.
