Mei Jie plot
Northwest China, early 1960s. Ten-year-old Tiedan falls madly in love with his neighbor when she sings a traditional Er-ran-rai duet with his father. During the Cultural Revolution, this traditional art form is banned and Tiedan's neighbor is kept at home by her husband. Tiedan, however, is so impressed that he is determined to become a singer himself. After years of practice, Tiedan becomes a gifted Er-ran-rai singer herself, and when his old neighbor returns to the village after all these years, he falls head over heels for all three daughters.
