Then you read that this film got a standing ovation of 7 minutes at the premiere in Cannes, and it's Francis Ford Coppola. Well, then the expectations are high. Then you're in for a rude awakening. The film never really manages to become interesting and leaves many questions unanswered. In fact, you immediately dive into the situation after 'the disaster' and don't even really know what happened. Visually it was beautiful, but then I'm only talking about the decor. The CGI was downright bad, which is remarkable with such a budget.

Very laborious. The film goes past two hours, but I rather had the feeling that I had been watching it for three hours. If the film wants to radiate one thing, it is one of grandeur and a series of power and wealth. And not just any wealth, but a decadence of arrogance and conceit. Visually a real spectacle where the gold and crystal drip from the screen. Babylon (Film, 2022) had that too, but at least there were some vibes and a clear storyline. Here you have that feeling much less.

Add to that those conceited references to ancient Rome, with buildings, decor, dressing and characters. The political intrigue is just thrown in. I don't know. I certainly didn't feel it either. Convincing visual cinema, that's for sure, but that's about it. The abundant gold is more like gold leaf. Various loose scenes without structure, making it hard to find a real storyline. At least, I didn't find them. Too plomb and too high-flown. Referring to old film classics? Well, I don't know if everyone is waiting for that.

While the trailer may claim that Coppola was “always ahead of his time,” he hasn’t made any notable films since Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992). Given the quality of his recent work, it’s no surprise that this pretentious, megalomaniacal ego-project is a flop. Coppola’s flamboyant visual style is intact, and there are plenty of pretty pictures, but the tale of the rivalry between inventor and visionary Cesar Catilina [Adam Driver] and conservative, money-hungry mayor Franklyn Cicero [Giancarlo Esposito] starts out as a thinly veiled, bitter crusade against Hollywood with Cesar as Coppola’s alter ego, and spirals out of control when Coppola tries to mix in a declaration of love for his late wife Eleanor and a critique of Trump and the MAGA movement. The story is a shambles, but the biggest problem is the lack of a character to relate to. Cost $120 million, but mostly feels like a cheap Christopher Nolan imitation.
