The author Humbert Humbert rents a room in Charlotte Haze's house after falling in love with her daughter Lolita. Kubrick has made some brilliantly good films. But this one doesn't belong to me. Long-winded and even boring here and there, largely floating on the Lolita-based controversy, but also here and there elements that seem needlessly deviate from it. Some scenes are very nice, and James Mason plays brilliantly - but Sue Lyon is pretty miscast in my opinion.

Perhaps Kubrick has indeed suffered too much from the censorship. Or maybe it wasn't until the later films that the genius really came out - I haven't seen his older work in its entirety yet. But this one was a bit of a disappointment to me - Lolita's fact was almost better developed in the EG Daily clip. But that only takes 5 minutes.

Good film in which a writer rents a room and falls in love with the daughter of the house. Both funny and pathetic to see the turns the main character twists to be with the girl. Some nice shots, but visually the least interesting of Stanley Kubrick. Pretty long, but enough happened. Good acting from the entire cast.

Finally watched this classic! It's a long sit but Kubrick knows how to make it a successful whole as usual.
Just the idea of starting with the end, so that you immediately become interested in the story and motives of the main character.

The moment Lolita came into the picture, the interest was immediately aroused, just like the main character you become fascinated by her and the reason why she sees something in Humbert.
Sue Lyon also acts very strongly, she is mature for her age, but at the same time you can clearly see the recognizable adolescent moments.
This subject was of course very daring in 1962, but I seriously wonder if a film like this should still be made today?

Even in 2019 still an impressive film, perhaps a tad "long-winded" in the middle, but still a special piece of film.

4*
