Maria, a country girl, wife and mother from the province, travels to the big city of São Paulo to escape her oppressive domestic life and her abusive husband. She begins to explore her newfound freedom by changing her name from Maria to Lilian, meeting different kinds of new people and becoming the mistress of an industrialist. Yet Maria is anything but satisfied.
