Le Rouge et le Noir plot
Julien Sorel is the son of a carpenter from the province, in the early nineteenth century. He wants to 'make it' in the world and his ambition is strengthened by the example of his great idol Napoleon and by Rousseau's reading. Because his environment and the zeitgeist stand in the way of honest self-development, he resolutely opts for a different approach: that of hypocrisy, temptation and deceit.
